USKA meets IEEE

Opening up to thematically related actors and striving for cooperation were already defined as strategic plans at the USKA Strategy Meeting 2020. We radio amateurs have never been the sole bearers of competence in our fields and can only benefit from mutual exchange and the bundling of forces. Ideally, this results in win-win situations. Also at the international level (IARU R1) it is clear that the ongoing development (“Shaping the Future”) only has a chance of success in this way. There is a considerable need for action at both USKA and IARU, which must be implemented quickly.

A rather obvious cooperation partner is the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). IEEE is the world’s largest association of electrical engineers, with 409,000 members in over 160 countries, 40% of them within the USA, 60% in other countries. More than 125,000 student members are proof that IEEE is also attractive to young professionals. The IEEE’s youth development programme is called tryEngineering.org – this has striking parallels to our youth efforts in amateur radio. It does not make sense for everyone to “reinvent the wheel”.

Invited by IEEE Switzerland, Willi Vollenweider HB9AMC gave a presentation on amateur radio at an IEEE Executive Committee meeting at ETH Zurich on 6 December (see download). Several swiss radio amateurs are IEEE members, several of them even on the board of IEEE Switzerland. The presentation met with a very positive response from the physical and online meeting participants. Common interests were addressed. Discussions will continue early next year.

There is a very active “IEEE Student Branch” at EPFL. Last year, it organised a very successful event “Amateur Radio: From Theory to Applications”, see here and here. As the head of this Student Branch reported, this event was exceptionally well attended with 80 participants.

In IEEE USA there is an amateur radio group called “IEEE MOVE RADIO CLUB (IMRC)” with a monthly meeting. Amateur Radio is also receiving attention in the TryEngineering initiative. There is considerable upward potential.

Radio amateurs who want to get involved in these or other cooperations are cordially invited to contact us! The exchange with organisations with which we share interests is very refreshing, brings new insights, opens up new perspectives and acquaintances!
