UNESCO World Radio Day on February 13, 2024 – “A century of information, entertainment and education”

UNESCO World Radio Day WRD will take place on February 13 with the motto “A century of information, entertainment and education”. It can be assumed that there will be broad media coverage, especially on the radio.

UNESCO’s aim in dedicating a day to radio is to promote a simple and inexpensive mass medium that is particularly suited to reaching remote communities and vulnerable people.

This day should also be a good opportunity to reflect on and recognize the media and its role in the development of society. Radio amateurs help to communicate and keep alive the technical knowledge of equipment and the behavior of electromagnetic waves.

For example, the EA Digital Federation has activated nine special event stations from February 9 to 18. The stations will be active on various bands and operating modes, including Fonie, CW and Digimodes. Operating times and information on the special QSLs can be found at https://www.fediea.org/news/?news=20240213.

World Radio Day was first celebrated in 2012 after being proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was subsequently adopted as an international day by the United Nations General Assembly.
